A caisson is a waterproof vessel for working underwater. It's not the name of the person who invented the disease!
Gas embolism – sometimes known as air or nitrogen embolism – has similar symptoms to caisson disease, and responds to the same treatment. The two are sometimes grouped together as 'decompression illness'.
